A friend of mine drilled this into my head AFTER he had been called to play on a very well known awards show. Well, the story is, he came straight to the show after getting off the plane, missed sound check and everything! The awards started and as soon as the soloist began singing the sustain pedal broke..yes BROKE! Guess who didn't have a spare in the bag, so he had to add strings to help get through the song!
